What this metric measures
Book yield is book value per share divided by price, the inverse of the price-to-book ratio. A PBR of 0.5 equals a book yield of 2.0, meaning the stock trades below its accounting book value. Fama and French used this ratio as the value factor in their 1992 three-factor model.
How we calculate it
Book value per share from the latest financial statements divided by the current price, sorted descending. The top of this list is therefore the lowest-PBR stocks.
Limitations of this list
Book value is recorded at historical cost and does not capture intangible-heavy businesses. Software and brand-driven companies structurally carry high PBR, asset-heavy manufacturers low. A PBR below 1 is not a liquidation-value margin of safety.
Frequently asked questions
Is a PBR below 1 automatically cheap?
No. Book value is a historical-cost accounting figure, not realisable value. Companies earning below their cost of equity should trade below book. Read it together with ROE.
What do high book yield stocks have in common?
Asset-heavy sectors such as manufacturing, financials and holding companies dominate the top. Intangible-driven businesses are penalised because their value never reaches the balance sheet.
Is PBR better than PER?
PBR applies even to loss-making companies; PER measures earnings power directly. The Fama-French three-factor model adopted book-to-market as the value factor, but practitioners use both.
