What this metric measures
Gross profitability measures how much gross profit a company produces per unit of assets. Robert Novy-Marx introduced it in a 2013 paper, arguing that gross profit is the line on the income statement least affected by accounting discretion and therefore harder to manage than net income. The paper reported predictive power comparable to book-to-market.
How we calculate it
Gross profit (revenue minus cost of goods sold) divided by total assets. Because it sits above depreciation, SG&A, interest and tax, companies investing heavily for growth are not penalised.
Limitations of this list
Results split structurally by industry. Software and pharmaceuticals score high because their cost of goods is low, while retail and construction score low. Ranking across sectors lets a few industries dominate the top.
Frequently asked questions
Why use gross profitability instead of net margin?
Gross profit precedes discretionary choices around depreciation method, SG&A allocation and one-off items. Novy-Marx (2013) showed this cleaner profitability measure explains future returns better than net-income-based ratios.
Can this metric alone identify quality companies?
No. High gross profitability with excessive debt or weak cash conversion is still risky. This list shows each company's F-Score and ROIC alongside so a single metric does not drive the read.
How do I compare within a sector?
The individual stock page shows the metric alongside sector context. This ranking covers the whole market, so sector concentration is expected.
